Problem
Food waste occurs throughout the food supply chain, but is most commonly seen at the retail and consumer stages, and varies across demographics.
In the UK, approximately 9.5 million tonnes of food are discarded annually, whilst this figure is 80 million tonnes in the USA. This, on average, costs UK households £470 per year; increasing to £700 for those with children.

Outcome
The TrackTray and app aim to tackle residential food waste by addressing poor cooking skills, expiry date awareness, and kitchen disorganisation.
A redesigned fridge tray with a rechargeable camera scans items, while the app uses AI to track expiry dates, suggest recipes, and create smart shopping lists, minimising waste and cognitive effort.
